The Missouri Chapter of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) will host the Southeast Missouri Team Hope Walk on Saturday, April 12, at Jackson City Park.
The event, which will be at Parkview Street, Pavilion No. 1, aims to raise funds to support HDSA’s mission of improving the lives of those affected by Huntington’s disease (HD) and their families. Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the walk/run/ride will start at 10 a.m.
Team Hope is HDSA’s largest national grassroots fundraising event, taking place in more than 100 cities across the United States. Since its inception in 2007, the event has raised more than $28 million in support of those with HD. Thousands of families, friends, co-workers, neighbors and communities participate each year to support HDSA’s mission. The event is nationally sponsored by Neurocrine Biosciences and Teva Pharmaceuticals.
Huntington’s disease is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain, affecting both physical and mental abilities. Every child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the faulty gene. Approximately 41,000 Americans are symptomatic, with more than 200,000 at risk of inheriting the disease. The symptoms of HD are often compared to having ALS, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s simultaneously.
