In a revent event, Ukraine has passed a list containing the names of 561 Ukrainian children who are illegally being held in Russia to Qatar.

The move comes as part of efforts to facilitate the return of these children to Ukraine from Russia, where they have been separated from their families due to the ongoing conflict.

This news is itself confimed by Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights. Though it is clarified that Ukraine and Russia are not directly negotiating for this mission, contradicting earlier statements made by Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova.

According to the Ukrainian government’s Children of War database, around 19,500 Ukrainian children have been confirmed as abducted by Russia since the beginning of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Sadly, less than 400 of these children have been able to return home.

The announcements have been made following two days of negotiations in Qatar.

Ukraine anticipates bringing back a group of children, likely due to ongoing negotiations. Though there is no detail given about the date or how many children will return. It’s uncertain if this group will include children from the list given to Qatar.

Meanwhile, Qatar also agreed to mediate the return of orphaned Ukrainian children from Russia for the first time. With that they agreed to participate in the negotiations regarding the retun of Ukrainain civilians held in Russia

On March 17, 2023, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Lvova-Belova and Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was because of the deportation of Ukrainian children. The 123 member states of the ICC must arrest Putin if he enters their territory.

Putin had praised Lvova-Belova’s work in overseeing the deportation of Ukrainian children. He called it a “humanitarian effort” to “protect Russian citizens.”
