The local administration seized nine tonnes of mangoes ripened with harmful chemicals in Satkhira district town and destroyed them on Thursday.
Sadar Thana police seized the chemical-laced mangoes, which were being sent to Dhaka in a truck, from Bypass Road in the morning. Later, a team led by district administration’s executive magistrate SM Akash destroyed the immature mangoes on Sultanpur PN Secondary School ground in the afternoon.
The executive magistrate said harmful chemicals were used to ripen the mangoes worth Tk 15 lakh.
He said the mangoes of Satkhira have a good reputation across the country but a section of dishonest people are trying to sell the adulterated fruit to get more profit.
He said such drive will continue to check marketing of chemical-laced mangoes.
